Initiation of Gen-AI with AgriFutures and FRDC - Unlocking Research with Applied AI
Making decades of RDC research discoverable with Gen-AI, accelerating innovation and knowledge flow.
The Challenge
RDCs needed to unlock value from decades of research outputs to enable discovery and reuse in the AI era.
The Approach
Recognising the need to make decades of research easier to access, the project began with a vision and co-design session to frame the solution. Early work focused on shaping a Gen-AI powered search capability with broader digital strategy and existing digital landscape, giving researchers and stakeholders the ability to rapidly find and use relevant research materials.
Alongside the technology, a shared IP and legal framework will be developed to ensure the solution can be adopted consistently across all Research Development Corporations (RDC) in Australia.

The Outcome
Project is currently in-flight with a goal to deliver an applied AI capability that accelerates innovation by improving research accessibility and sector-wide knowledge flows
Developed the initial scoping alongside FRDC and AgriFutures to enable shared AI capability across the RDCs
Established a framework to enable shared IP and Legal framework to enable a 'build once, use multiple times' approach to AI development
Supported pioneering this concept for RDCs and identified funding mechanisms to enable this
The Future
The project is still in motion, with prototypes already showing promise. The next chapter is full deployment of the search tool and extending the “build once, use many times” model across other RDCs and sectors.
